Cricket Bat Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Bat Size

Choosing the right cricket bat size is about more than age. A bat should feel comfortable through the pickup, backlift and stroke, while its length should suit the player’s height and playing style.

Quick cricket bat size guide

As a practical starting point, younger players generally use smaller sizes, while taller teenagers and adults move toward full-size bats. The most important check is comfort: the player should be able to control the bat without struggling to lift, rotate or play defensive shots.

  • Size 1–3: suited to younger junior players.
  • Size 4–5: commonly used by developing junior players.
  • Size 6: a useful option for older juniors who are not ready for a full-size bat.
  • Harrow: an intermediate size for taller juniors and some teenage players.
  • Short Handle (SH): the standard adult size for many players.
  • Long Blade / Long Handle: worth considering only when the player’s height, reach and comfort justify the extra length.

Choose by height, not age alone

Age ranges are only a guide because players of the same age can have very different heights and strength. When choosing between two sizes, test the bat standing naturally. The player should be able to control the blade comfortably and move it through a normal batting stance without excessive strain.

What about bat weight?

Size and weight are separate decisions. A correctly sized bat can still be too heavy for a particular player. Start with a weight that can be picked up easily, controlled through the backlift and used repeatedly without the player losing balance or timing.

English Willow or Kashmir Willow?

Once the size is right, choose the willow type based on budget, playing level and expected use. English Willow bats are commonly selected by players looking for a more premium performance-focused option, while Kashmir Willow bats can offer a practical and economical choice for training, club cricket and regular hard-ball use.

Before you buy

Check the bat’s listed size, weight, willow type and handle specification. If you are between sizes, prioritize control and comfort rather than choosing the longest bat simply because it looks bigger.
